This film is adapted from the second part of American author Cooper's "Leatherstocking" series. During the Seven Years' War in 1757, the British and French armies are engaged in fierce battles in the North American colonies. Officer Duncan leads a convoy to escort the commander’s daughter, Cora (played by Madeleine Stowe), to Fort William Henry, but they are ambushed by French-allied Native Americans along the way. The last warriors of the Mohican tribe, Uncas and his father Chingachgook (played by Russell Means), along with the white man Hawkeye (played by Daniel Day-Lewis), come to their rescue. However, upon reaching the fort, they find it engulfed in flames, and the fort commander, Colonel Monroe, is inflexible in his leadership, refusing to let the militia leave to reduce their fighting capability, and he imprisons Hawkeye. At this moment, Cora has already fallen in love with Hawkeye but is unable to rescue him. The British troops, facing defeat, abandon the fort and surrender. The Native American Magua leads his people in seeking revenge against the British, and after Cora and Hawkeye become separated, she is taken away by Magua. Hawkeye, Chingachgook, and Uncas then venture into Magua’s camp in hopes of bringing Cora back.
