In Episode 16 of "The Hardship of a Man," a seventeen-year-old girl, Shunko (played by Junko Sakurada), comes to visit and claims that Torajiro (played by Kiyoshi Atsumi) is her father! Fortunately, Torajiro has just returned to his home in Shibamata, allowing him to clarify everything. It turns out that over ten years ago, in Yamagata Prefecture, when Torajiro was suffering from hunger and cold, he was given a warm meal by the girl’s mother, Ayaka. He never forgot this kindness and has since sent money to Ayaka every year, unbeknownst to him leading Shunko to mistakenly believe he is her biological father. Torajiro learns from Shunko that Ayaka passed away last year, which makes him very sad, prompting him to independently visit her grave in Yamagata Prefecture. Upon discovering that Ayaka had reproached him in life for not being educated, leading her to be deceived by men and suffer throughout her life, he resolves to pursue education and work hard. Back at his family’s shop, he coincidentally has a new tenant, a graduate student named Riko (played by Bunjaku Han), and naturally seizes the opportunity to learn from this beautiful woman. However, Riko has a close university professor (played by Keiju Kobayashi) who is knowledgeable and wild, and has been secretly in love with Riko... Torajiro faces a new rival in love.
