The story takes place in the distant 26th century, where a surgeon named Ido (played by Christoph Waltz) discovers a headless mechanical girl in a junkyard and brings her home. He gives her a body that was originally intended for his deceased daughter and names her Alita (played by Rosa Salazar). Upon awakening, Alita becomes deeply interested in this colorful yet violent and cruel world. After meeting a young man named Hugo (played by Keean Johnson), Alita begins to engage in a sport called Motorball, showcasing an incredible talent for fighting during the competitions. Above the residents of Iron City floats the massive airborne city of Zalem, where the efforts and labor of Iron City citizens are all aimed at providing fuel for Zalem to continue operating. In the Motorball competitions organized by the wealthy tycoon Vector (played by Mahershala Ali), the ultimate champion will earn the qualification to live in Zalem. Alita decides to harness her fighting talent to participate in the competitions, only to become embroiled in a vast conspiracy.
