The story takes place in the distant 26th century, where the surgeon Ido (played by Christoph Waltz) finds a mechanical girl with only her head left in a junkyard and brings her home. He installs a prosthetic that was originally meant for his deceased daughter and names her Alita (played by Rosa Salazar). After awakening, Alita becomes fascinated by this colorful yet violent and cruel world. After meeting a young man named Hugo (played by Keean Johnson), she starts to engage in a sport called Motorball, showcasing her incredible fighting talent in the competitions. Above the residents of Iron City floats the massive sky city of Salem, where everything the residents do is to provide fuel for Salem to continue operating. In the Motorball competitions set up by the powerful tycoon Vector (played by Mahershala Ali), the final champion earns the right to live in Salem.
