Intro: Seventy-Two TenantsIn Western Vegetable Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong, shops are plentiful and tourists come and go. Ha Gong (played by Eric Tsang) and Shek Gin (played by Jacky Cheung) run mobile phone stores facing each other across the street, and both are vying for business with various tricks, unwilling to back down. In fact, they were friends many years ago, and the story of their clever tactics against the landlord is still a well-known tale. However, they eventually fell out over Little Tao Hong (played by Anita Yuen). Now, Little Tao Hong loves Ha Gong, but she still holds affection for her old friend Shek Gin deep down. The children of both families also secretly interact and gradually develop feelings for each other. The major landlord wants to triple the rent, leaving the merchants in distress. Mysterious individuals have been throwing sulfuric acid from heights, causing panic among the residents of the small street. In order to protect their rights to survive and restore peace to Western Vegetable Street, the merchants decide to unite and defend their home together... This film is a collaboration between Shaw Brothers and TVB, featuring over 100 stars from across the regions, hence it is also known as the Hong Kong version of 'The Founding of a Republic'.
