The paper effigy store worker Zhu Hongli (played by Sammo Hung) was raised by his uncle, the Taoist priest (played by Lam Ching-Ying). Although Zhu Hongli has not mastered much of the Taoist arts and often acts clumsily, he has a righteous heart. He refuses to burden his betrothed fiancée Ayun (played by Cherie Chung), often giving her the cold shoulder. Zhu Hongli's best friend Ma Linxiang (played by Wu Ma) ventures out and returns home as a corpse. Along with him comes Ma Linxiang's pregnant wife and a few male companions. Zhu Hongli finds the situation suspicious and investigates but finds nothing. A few days later, the vengeful spirit of Ma Linxiang seeks Zhu Hongli's help. It turns out that Ma Linxiang did not die upon returning home; rather, he had planned with others to steal his family’s burial items, but unexpectedly, the fake scheme turned real, resulting in him losing his life at the hands of his accomplices. Disheartened, Zhu Hongli cannot resist the spirit's torment and asks his uncle for help to take revenge on behalf of his friend. However, he ultimately loses his own body and dies. Heartbroken, Ayun, guided by her uncle, plans to outsmart the ghostly messenger and reclaim Zhu Hongli’s soul...
