In the late 1970s, Xu Lingjun (played by Zhu Shimao), a primary school teacher and horse herder who had spent half his life on the Chulchuan Pasture in Northwest China, arrived at the Beijing Hotel, where he met his father Xu Jingyou (played by Liu Qiong), a returned overseas Chinese entrepreneur, for the first time in 30 years. Back then, yearning for personal freedom, Xu Jingyou could no longer bear his unhappy marriage and left his wife and children to go to the United States. Now that he has returned, he intends to take Xu Lingjun back to America to inherit his business. Reflecting on the path he has taken over the decades, he acknowledges the tragic experiences of his childhood as an abandoned child and his youth being labeled a rightist and sent to the pasture. Yet, he has also felt the warmth of humanity several times from the innocent and kind-hearted local villagers. After marrying the unfortunate Sichuan woman Li Xiuzhi (played by Cong Shan) during the difficult times, Xu Lingjun has experienced both the bitterness and sweetness that come from hardships. He believes that after the country has struggled through the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution, individuals should closely accompany their friends and family, steadfastly following the nation towards a new beginning.
