In the desolate American West, a railway is under construction, and since the railway will pass through Rockridge, the politician Hedley (played by Harvey Korman), sensing that local land prices will soar, plans to evict all the residents of the town. The residents are worried about the impending attack and hope that the state government will send a strong sheriff to protect them. However, Hedley is working behind the scenes to have the governor appoint the first black sheriff in history, Bart (played by Cleavon Little), to defend Rockridge. Bart was originally a railroad worker, sentenced to death for beating up the foreman, but just before his execution, fate surprisingly turns in his favor. Surviving the ordeal, Bart has to face the disdain of Rockridge's residents and the thugs on Hedley's side. With the help of the former sharpshooter Jim (played by Gene Wilder), Bart continuously defeats Hedley's men, but the real hard battle is still ahead of him...
