The little boy Hugo (played by Asa Butterfield) is a natural mechanical enthusiast. He lives in the clock tower of a Paris train station and occasionally steals parts from a toy store to repair a robot left by his father (played by Jude Law). During one of his thefts, he is caught by the store owner George Méliès (played by Ben Kingsley), and due to the fear of a patrolling policeman with a dog (played by Sacha Baron Cohen), he has no choice but to comply. George takes away a keepsake from Hugo's father—a mechanical handbook—causing Hugo to become anxious. He follows George home and meets his adopted daughter, Isabelle (played by Chloë Moretz), and pleads with her to help him keep the handbook. Isabelle finds the situation suspicious, so the two of them team up to investigate. The signed painting made by the repaired robot reveals George's name, raising their suspicions. Eventually, they discover a mysterious cabinet in George's home filled with paintings and learn about George's past from books on film in the library. An informant's appearance adds more mystery to their fantastical adventure… This film is based on the novel of the same name by Brian Selznick and is Martin Scorsese's first 3D film.
