Rob (played by John Cusack) is a music enthusiast who owns a record store, where two of his employees, Dick and Barry, are also music lovers. One day, Rob's girlfriend, Laura (played by Iben Hjejle), tells him that she wants to break up, and he can't even figure out why. As a result, he starts his own 'breakup playlist' to reflect on his history of failed relationships. He realizes that he always seems to be the one getting dumped, so he decides to reach out to his ex-girlfriends to ask them why they chose to break up with him. Meanwhile, Laura keeps in touch with Rob as she has to move out of his place. At one point, Rob learns from a friend of Laura's that she has started dating Ian (played by Tim Robbins), who lives in the apartment above theirs. This hits Rob hard, and he begins to harass Laura and Ian with phone calls and loiters outside their building. Finally, one day, a turning point arrives when Laura tells Rob that her father has passed away...
