Sophie (played by Mickey Sumner) is Francis's (played by Greta Gerwig) best friend and roommate. They spend all their time together, and their relationship is seemingly much more intimate than that of a couple. However, one day, Sophie suddenly tells Francis that she is moving into the city to live with another girl. Although Sophie assures her that they will still be friends, Francis feels deeply disappointed. Unable to afford rent on her own, Francis has no choice but to look for another place to live. At a critical moment, Sophie's friend Lev (played by Adam Driver) lends Francis a hand, and thus, Francis begins her living arrangement with Lev and Lev's roommate Benji (played by Michael Zegen), promising to pay the full rent after the Christmas dance performance. Unfortunately, not long after, Francis loses her job, and for a time, she does not know where to go or what to do.
