In the 1930s, sisters Xiao Yun and Xiao Hong (Zhou Xuan) were tricked into coming to Shanghai and sold to a couple of a musician and a brothel madam. Xiao Yun was forced to work as a clandestine prostitute, while young Xiao Hong, with her beautiful voice, accompanied the musician to the teahouse to sing all day. The sisters lived in a slum, and across from them lived Old Wang, a news vendor, and Chen Shaoping, a drummer (Zhao Dan). During their free time, Chen Shaoping often played with Xiao Hong at the window, and they developed feelings for each other. When Xiao Hong was harassed by a thug named Gu Chenglong, who wanted to take her as a concubine, she consulted Chen Shaoping for a plan. The two wanted to seek justice through a lawyer, but the lawyer was only interested in money. They had no choice but to flee, and in this process, Old Wang developed feelings for Xiao Yun out of pity, but Xiao Yun, due to her insecurities, dared not face him. The musician learned about Xiao Hong and Chen Shaoping's whereabouts and informed Gu Chenglong.
