This HBO-produced film is another war realism movie directed by John Irvin, who also directed 'Hamburger Hill', set during World War II, amidst the bloody Battle of Hürtgen Forest. After a line of comrades is wiped out by the enemy, the only survivor, Private David Manning (played by Logan Lerman, known for 'Comet' and 'Four Brothers'), is promoted to a non-commissioned officer. Unable to bear the pressure of leading new recruits, Manning applies for discharge on the grounds of being mentally unfit. However, Manning's commander (played by Martin Donovan, known for 'Her and Him and Them') sets a condition that if he successfully leads his men to capture a German outpost, he will forward Manning's discharge request. But in the brutal and merciless war, what matters is not victory, but how to survive the battlefield. When it comes to epic films about World War II, 'Saving Private Ryan' and 'Red Dawn' may have stolen the spotlight, but this film is definitely one that cannot be missed and is a top-notch war realism film in its own right.
