The homeless man Charlie (played by Charlie Chaplin) joins a group looking for gold in Alaska. He encounters the wanted criminal Lawson in a small cabin, and then the gold miner Jim bursts in and grabs Lawson's gun. When Lawson goes out to find food, he discovers Jim's developing gold mine, and doesn't return to the cabin. Inside the cabin, the starving Charlie cooks a shoe to stave off hunger, while the delirious Jim imagines Charlie as a turkey to chase. Suddenly, a bear crashes in, and the two manage to kill the bear together, after which they part ways after a hearty meal. Jim discovers that Lawson has taken over his gold mine and is knocked unconscious by Lawson, who then accidentally falls into a deep ravine while escaping. Charlie meets the dancer Georgia (played by Georgia Hale) in the town and helps her fend off the harassment from a nouveau riche man. The second time they meet, Charlie invites her to dinner on New Year's Eve, but Georgia stands him up. Disappointed, Charlie can only perform a dance for her in his dreams. Jim, having lost his memory, runs into Charlie in town and asks for his help to find the gold mine. They return to the cabin, but are blown into a bottomless abyss by a fierce snowstorm. When they wake up, they are delighted to find the gold mine right next to them. Charlie and Jim strike it rich and encounter the struggling Georgia on the boat back home. In front of the news reporters, Charlie and Georgia embrace intimately.
