An unconventional love story, entwined with erotic language. In 1957, former Nazi officer Max (played by Dirk Bogarde) lives in hiding, working as a midnight doorman at a hotel in Vienna. One day, he encounters Lucia (played by Charlotte Rampling), the wife of a famous conductor, and memories flood back. It turns out that Lucia is a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp; she was once Max's sex slave and lover, and he has never forgotten her. While Lucia is out performing, Max reunites with her and quickly brings her to his apartment, where they rapidly rekindle their past relationship. Meanwhile, the remnants of the Nazi group that Max belongs to are also searching for Lucia, wanting to eliminate this powerful witness. Lucia's husband alerts the police due to her disappearance. With no way out, Max stockpiles a large amount of food in his apartment and he and Lucia remain indoors, finding solace in each other through sex, trying to forget the dire reality as they await the inevitable redemption or destruction.
