However, a disaster strikes when their second son, Jiro (played by Nobuyuki Ichiyanagi), contracts encephalitis and becomes unable to care for himself. Stricken by this blow, Shunko becomes superstitious and religious, leading to increasing tensions within the family. During this time, Yixiong meets the young actress Keiko Yajima (played by Mieko Harada), who also comes from Kyushu, and invites her to join him for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Dazai Osamu literary monument.
