In New York, London dentist Berent Pinkus (played by Richy Gervais) is not good at interacting with others; he is selfish and cynical. During a colon surgery mishap, Berent experiences a near-death experience for 7 minutes, and when he wakes up, he possesses the ability to communicate with ghosts. Troubled by the persistent disturbances from many ghosts, Berent encounters the spirit of Frank (played by Greg Kinnear), a former public relations expert. Seeking peace, Berent agrees to help him stop Frank's widow, the archaeologist Gwen (played by Téa Leoni), from remarrying her human rights lawyer boyfriend Richard (played by Billy Campbell). As Berent interacts with Gwen, he finds himself gradually falling in love; although Gwen and Richard's wedding is successfully called off, it does not fulfill Frank's desire to close his unfinished business. Moreover, the requests from other ghosts for Berent's help in fulfilling their last wishes intensify, leaving the self-centered Berent at a loss...
