The story takes place in 16th century Spain, during a time when Spain and England were fiercely engaged in a bitter war. Captain Richard of the English fleet (played by Lyn Harding) and his son Michael (played by Laurence Olivier) are captured by local forces. However, Richard and Spanish Admiral Vardes (played by Charles Carson) are old friends, so Michael is sent to Vardes's home, while Richard dies under enemy fire. At Vardes's house, Michael meets Vardes's daughter Cynthia (played by Vivien Leigh), who is infatuated with the handsome and capable Michael. However, Michael returns to England, full of anger towards the enemy, to pledge his loyalty to the Queen. Subsequently, Michael goes into hiding and disguises himself to carry out an undercover mission in Spain, where he is arranged by the King to stay at Hillary's (played by James Mason) home, only to unexpectedly encounter Cynthia, who has now become Hillary's wife.
