To match Baoyu with Baochai, the scheming Wang Xifeng (played by Zhang Ling) devises a scheme of deception. On the wedding night, Baoyu is overjoyed thinking he is marrying Daiyu, only to discover that under the red veil sits Baochai. Meanwhile, the forsaken Daiyu, believing she has been abandoned, is heartbroken and dies. Grief-stricken, Baoyu defies his family's objections, shaves his head to become a monk, and ultimately enters the Buddhist path.
