After a line of comrades is wiped out by the enemy, the only survivor, Private David Manning (played by Logan Lerman, known for 'Comet' and 'Four Brothers'), is promoted to a non-commissioned officer. Unable to bear the pressure of leading new recruits, Manning applies for discharge on the grounds of being mentally unfit. However, Manning's commander (played by Martin Donovan, known for 'Her and Him and Them') sets a condition that if he successfully leads his men to capture a German outpost, he will forward Manning's discharge request. But in the brutal and merciless war, what matters is not victory, but how to survive the battlefield.
