Director:Biggs Luna
Actor:Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Penélope Cruz, Jandy Mora
Intro: Court Grievance HistoryThe film unfolds its story using a "flashback" technique based on Goya's painting "The Nude Maja" and revolves around the causes and consequences of the Duchess being poisoned, telling a tale of "intrigues and romances within the Spanish court" (which can’t simply be summarized in a few words as just "a man and two women’s story"). The painter encounters a wild girl (played by Penélope Cruz) on the road with the prime minister, the Duchess, and others; in fact, both the prime minister and the Duchess are also deeply engrossed in a passionate entanglement from which they cannot extricate themselves; the prime minister maintains a "close" relationship with the queen for his own position... He loves the Duchess, but the queen, for political reasons, forces him to marry the sister of a cardinal, while the "common girl" he still loves stays by his side... The painter also admires the Duchess, perhaps harboring a secret affection for her; he paints for her, intertwining his love for the young girl and his feelings for the Duchess into a portrait of a clothed "noblewoman" and a nude "noblewoman" which he presents to the "prime minister". Ultimately, the Duchess's competitive nature leads to her downfall, and she refers to it all as the history of court grievances (forgive me for not understanding Spanish). The questions surrounding who "poisoned" the Duchess, with the prime minister, the painter, and the girl (whom the noblewoman scorns as a "whore") entangled in this court feud have a "Rashomon"-like interpretation; however, in the end, it doesn’t matter who killed the Duchess, as such entanglements of men and women within the fierce court struggles are trivial. Everything becomes about "interests"; for personal desires, any so-called love and being loved can be sacrificed. Watching the prime minister's "disgusting" actions to please the queen helps us understand the combination of "political interests" and "personal ambitions". The Duchess becomes the victim of this "game". The first half of the film describes the relationships of these people; the second half unfolds the interests and various opinions regarding each person's ties to her, leaving it up to you to believe or not.
