Intro: The Tale of the Taitung (Part One)On the eve of the victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Nationalist army general Lei Yifang (played by Huang Xiaoming) achieved a significant victory at a heavy cost. The survivors of this battle included messenger Tong Daqing (played by Tong Dawei) and Taiwanese Japanese army doctor Yan Zekun (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro). After the war ended, Lei Yifang quickly fell in love with the wealthy young lady Zhou Yunfen (played by Song Hye-kyo); Tong Daqing developed feelings for a single woman named Yu Zhen (played by Zhang Ziyi), with whom he pretended to be a couple for mutual benefits, but they soon parted ways. Yan Zekun returned smoothly to Taiwan, traveling on the 'Taiping' ship across the strait to purchase medicinal materials, yet he couldn't forget his childhood friend, the Japanese woman Yazi (played by Masami Nagasawa). The outbreak of the civil war forced Lei Yifang and Tong Daqing back to the battlefield, while Zhou Yunfen and her family took the 'Taiping' ship to Taiwan, beginning a long wait. The misfortunes of history brought everyone together, and the 'Taiping' ship became a point of longing for several couples throughout their lives.
