Intro: Goodbye, Li XianglanLi Xianglan's original name was Yamaguchi Shuko, and her family called her Dou Dou. She was Japanese, born on February 12, 1920, in Beiyantai near Fengtian (now Shenyang) in Liaoning Province, China. Soon after, her family moved to Fushun. Yamaguchi Shuko was born into a sinologist family in Japan; her grandfather was a sinologist from Saga Prefecture, and her father, influenced by him, went to study in China at a young age and later worked for the South Manchuria Railway Company. Growing up in Shenyang and then living in Fushun, one bloody memory from her youth stayed with her for life—she witnessed several bound Chinese people being shot dead on the spot by Japanese gendarmes in 1932, their bodies torn and bloody. Later, she learned that this was related to the Pingdingshan Incident, where 3,000 Chinese civilians were massacred by the Japanese army. During the Pingdingshan Incident, her father was detained for 'collaboration,' and afterward, the Yamaguchi family moved to Shenyang. At the age of 13, she recognized her father's Chinese classmate, Li Jichun, the pro-Japanese president of a bank in Shenyang, as her adoptive father, which gave her a beautiful name—Li Xianglan. In 1943, the young and naive Li Xianglan, filled with love for both China and Japan and dreams for the future, arrived in Beiping (now Beijing), where she studied at Yijiao Girls' School under the name Pan Shuhua.
