Yang Tieniu, the vice president of the court, sat in the position of the presiding judge. The atmosphere in the courtroom was solemn and dignified. Just as Yang Tieniu picked up the judgment to begin reading, a woman's hoarse scream suddenly echoed in the courtroom: "No!" She was Shao Hong, Zhang Shijie's wife. Yang Tieniu and Judge Lin Zihan went to the detention center to deliver the criminal judgment to Zhang Shijie. Inmate Wu Xijiang suddenly started to wail. From Yang Tieniu, Lin Zihan learned that Wu Xijiang had been sentenced to death for intentional homicide eighteen months ago and that the high court was reviewing his appeal. Lin Zihan went to visit her close friend Zhao Qinghua's clothing store and received news that Zhang Shijie had committed suicide. Lin Zihan hurried to the hospital where Yang Tieniu informed her that Zhang was out of danger. When Yang Tieniu returned home, his wife Liu Zaochun was waiting for him. A quarrel broke out between the couple. Feeling low and exhausted, Yang Tieniu received a call from city party secretary Sun Zhi, inquiring about Zhang Shijie’s condition. The deputy head of the court party group, Zhang Yeming, told Yang Tieniu that the municipal organization department wanted to assess cadres at the intermediate court. Lin Zihan then conveyed three conditions proposed by Zhang Shijie to Yang Tieniu.
