In fact, Darl is a robot with a chip implanted in his brain, but he now possesses all the physiological functions of a normal child. The people who came to pick him up were not his parents, but rather the doctor who created him. The doctor was moved by the strong emotions that Darl and Andy shared, and he wished for Darl to live like a normal child, but high-ranking officials in the country insisted on destroying Darl. With the help of his colleagues, the doctor took Darl out of the testing facility, only to be pursued by the police, during which the doctor was shot while trying to shield Darl. The ground-controlled planes at the air force base self-destructed during the flight, and Darl ejected from the plane, landing in the lake next to Andy's house.
