Intro： The Tomb in the WildernessThe scholarly Yang Yuwei (played by Xing Minshan), who is single-mindedly pursuing fame and success, studies hard in his secluded chamber and meets the beautiful ghost Lian Suo (played by Fu Yiwei). As feelings grow between them, Yuwei learns that the ghostly figure Bai Wuchang wants to take Lian Suo as his concubine. He thwarts this plan and brings Lian Suo back to his home. Lian's father (played by Han Tingqi) looks down on the lowly Yang Yuwei and refuses to marry his daughter to him. On his way to the imperial examination, Yuwei faces unforeseen challenges but is saved by the fox spirit Qiao Na (played by Zhou Xun) and stays in her home to recuperate and prepare for the exam. On the road again, he is pursued by the osmanthus spirit Nie Xiaoqian (played by Hu Tiange), but he remains unmoved by her beauty. Seeing that Yuwei is a true gentleman, Nie Xiaoqian gives him secrets on how to avoid demons and uses magic to help him excel in the examination. On his way back home, he selflessly saves Qiao Na's family from a disastrous thunderstorm. However, upon returning to Lian's residence, he discovers that his devoted Lian Suo has already hanged herself out of despair.
