 Synopsis
Dr. Yusuke Tadokoro, a geophysicist (played by Kei Koizumi), leads his team on a deep-sea scientific expedition, only to discover unusual cracks and debris flows on the seabed. After a series of investigations, he concludes that the Japanese archipelago is set to sink within a year. However, the Japanese government officials believe Dr. Tadokoro's prediction is nothing more than an untrustworthy lie. Only Prime Minister Yamamoto (played by Koji Ishizaka) recognizes the seriousness of the situation and appoints Tadokoro's ex-wife, Saori Takamori (played by Mao Daichi), as the crisis management minister, leading Dr. Tadokoro and their team to find a way to save Japan. Soon, large-scale geological disasters begin in the Japanese islands starting from Hokkaido, plunging the entire nation into panic. The government is helpless in the face of the disaster, and the only overseas relocation policy is inadequate to cope with the rapidly deteriorating situation. The reality of the Japanese archipelago completely sinking is approaching. Eventually, Dr. Tadokoro and his scientific team finally discover a method that could save Japan, but its practical implementation is fraught with challenges... This film is adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by Japanese science fiction writer Sakyo Komatsu and has a budget of 2 billion yen, making it one of the most heavily invested and promoted disaster films in recent years in Japan.
