Intro： The Tomb in RuinThe scholarly Yang Yuwei (played by Xing Minshan), who is single-mindedly pursuing fame and success, studies hard in his secluded chamber. There, he meets the beautiful ghost Lian Suo (played by Fu Yiwei), and feelings gradually develop between them. Upon learning that the grim reaper Bai Wuchang wants to take Lian Suo as his concubine, Yuwei successfully thwarts his plans and takes Lian Suo back to his home. Lian's father (played by Han Tingqi) looks down on the lowly status of Yuwei and refuses to betroth his daughter to him. While traveling to the capital for the examination, Yuwei encounters misfortune, but fortunately, he is rescued by the fox spirit Qiao Na (played by Zhou Xun) and taken in to recuperate and prepare for the exam. When Yuwei sets out again, he is teased by the osmanthus spirit Nie Xiaoqian (played by Hu Tiange), but he is not swayed by her beauty. Seeing that Yuwei is a true gentleman, Nie Xiaoqian imparts to him secrets to avoid demons and uses magic to ensure that Yuwei ranks high on the examination list. On his way back home, he saves Qiao Na's family from a thunderous calamity, and when he returns to the Lian residence, he learns that the infatuated Lian Suo had already hanged herself in despair waiting for him...
