During the reign of the Wanli Emperor in the Ming Dynasty, the imperial concubine Tong Niang Niang conspired with the eunuch Cao Hua Ruo of the Eastern Factory to elevate her son to the position of crown prince. They widely executed the upright and honest censors, stirring a bloody storm in the capital and beyond. Many conscientious officials who knew the truth fell victim to assassination. One of Cau Hua Ruo's adopted sons, Ma Xing Kong, served as the assassin for the imperial concubine and Cao Hua Ruo. Ma Xing Kong's father was a senior court official, but after his sudden death in a political upheaval, the young Ma Xing Kong was taken in by Cao Hua Ruo, where he trained in martial arts and became an extraordinary fighter, used as a tool for Cao Hua Ruo’s killings. Holding a kill list jointly devised by his adoptive father and the imperial concubine, Ma Xing Kong repeatedly succeeded in assassinations. As heads of honest officials rolled, he began to feel remorse for his devilish deeds. During his solitary and difficult times, he met a pure mute girl, the qin player Ling Er. The genuine feelings he experienced with Ling Er made him consider retreating from his life of crime. Just as Ma Xing Kong started to contemplate leaving, his adoptive father Cao Hua Ruo sent his other sons, Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan, to assassinate him for refusing to carry out orders. Their schemes failed, resulting in a complete break between Ma Xing Kong and Cao Hua Ruo. To protect Ling Er, he fled the capital with her to an inn outside the city, entrusting her safety to his friend Liu Bing Yu while secretly hiding the assassination list intended for the imperial concubine and Cao Hua Ruo. After Ma Xing Kong betrayed his sect, Cao Hua Ruo issued orders to eliminate him, sending Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan to pursue him relentlessly. They tracked Ma Xing Kong to the inn, but Liu Bing Yu cleverly protected Ling Er and redirected Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan towards Ma Xing Kong's hideout in a remote cabin. Ma Xing Kong prepared a deadly welcome for Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan outside the cabin. Realizing they were no match for their senior brother, Leng Zhan threw a poisoned dart that struck Ma Xing Kong. Just as he faced danger, a masked hero emerged from the darkness to confront Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan, allowing Ma Xing Kong to escape despite his injuries. Ma Xing Kong seemed to fall off a cliff and 'died', while Qiu Hu and Leng Zhan returned to report to Cao Hua Ruo. However, Ma Xing Kong was not destined to die; he floated down the stream at the base of the cliff and was rescued by Master Hui Shan from the Shaolin Temple. Surviving his ordeal, he became a target for vengeance from Shaolin. Cao Hua Ruo personally took action, kidnapping Ling Er from the inn and heading to Shaolin Temple. Outside Shaolin, Ma Xing Kong, sworn enemies with Cao Hua Ruo, received assistance from Zhang Wu Ji, the chief of the Ministry of Justice. Cao Hua Ruo was killed under Ma Xing Kong's sword, enabling Ma Xing Kong to settle his family and national grievances and thereafter, he devoted himself to Buddhist practice.
