Nine years after '2001: A Space Odyssey', former National Aeronautics and Space Administration Director Dr. Floyd (played by Roy Scheider) accepts a Soviet-American cooperation plan. He leads the team including the designer of the Discovery spacecraft, Dr. Chandra (played by John Lithgow), and the creator of the HAL 9000 computer, Dr. Chandra (played by Bob Balaban) to dock with a Soviet space station near Jupiter. They collaborate with Soviet cosmonaut Captain (played by Helen Mirren) to connect with the American Discovery spacecraft, investigating the cause of an incident from nine years prior, exploring the mysterious black monolith of Europa, and uncovering the reason behind astronaut David Bowman’s (played by Keir Dullea) mysterious disappearance. However, as the mission progresses, U.S.-Soviet relations become increasingly tense, leading to the brink of war; at the same time, David Bowman unexpectedly appears and issues a mysterious warning to Dr. Floyd. This film is adapted from Arthur C. Clarke's novel '2010: Odyssey Two' and received five Oscar nominations for Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup, and Best Sound.
