In the mining town of Prosperity, Arizona, USA, a truck transporting chemical materials had an accident, dumping toxic waste into the local river. The town sheriff, Sam Parker (played by Kari Wührer), is skeptical when her son Mike (played by Scott Terra) discovers giant spider legs, suspecting foul play against the spider farmer, but she does not listen to her son's explanations. Chris McCormack (played by David Arquette), the son of the town's mine owner, returns at a town council meeting to oppose the mayor's proposal to sell the mine. Chris still has feelings for Sam but lacks the courage to express them. Mike shows the giant spider leg to Chris, who remains doubtful. Meanwhile, the giant spiders in the mine begin to attack the town's animals, and then humans.
