A pair of girls, Victoria De Santos (played by Megan Charpentier) and Lily De Santos (played by Isabelle Nélisse), have their mother murdered by their father, who then commits suicide, leaving the two daughters abandoned in the woods. Five years later, when they are found, they are in extremely poor condition, lonely and hungry, and they react with fear and resistance to any physical contact, leaving no one knowing how they survived in such isolation. Their uncle Lucas (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend Annabel (played by Jessica Chastain) adopt them, shattering their previously peaceful life. In the darkness, there is always a ghost lurking, and this ghost that wants to kill them is referred to by the two girls as 'mommy.' This film is the feature debut of Spanish director Andrés Muschietti, a remake of his 2008 short film of the same name.
