Dan (played by Alain Chabat) is a television news reporter who sets out alone to the Bolungbi rainforest to interview the leader of the Bayah tribe for an exclusive news story. Babidou (played by Jamel Debbouze), who lives in a small town near Bolungbi, is often referred to as a "liar" by the children he has adopted. In order to repay his debts to the orphans he has taken in and to prove that what he said is true—that the long-tailed leopard Matthew truly exists and has saved him—Babibitu acts as Dan's jungle guide. They embark on an adventurous journey through the Bolungbi jungle, facing ups and downs as they confront the evil dual-natured botanist the old Professor Hemosong (played by Fred Testot). To maintain his youth, Hemosong needs to use the magical orchid plants brought by Matthew to create a rejuvenating potion, leading him to stop at nothing to steal Matthew's egg. Babidou and Dan team up with General Buchero (played by Lambert Wilson), who commands the local troops in Bolungbi, to successfully rescue the egg of the long-tailed leopard Matthew. With Matthew's help during a final live television broadcast, Babibitu successfully proves to his children that he is not a liar, while Dan also proves to his father and the television station that he is a true news hero.
