To better embody the character, Jeff Goldblum visited Israel multiple times to communicate with Holocaust survivors, and he also spent time in Berlin to experience life there, in addition to taking violin lessons to better portray the character's personality.When the original novel was published in Israel, it had poor sales, with the author, now 77, explaining, "Because at that time, no Israelis wanted to hear stories about the victims anymore." The movie had a budget of 7 million pounds and was filmed in Haifa, Tel Aviv, Romania, and various locations in Germany.
