This film depicts one of the most brutal wars in human history: the Battle of Thermopylae. In 480 BC, Persian King Xerxes I (played by Rodrigo Santoro) led an army of 300,000 men into battle against Greece. The various city-states of Greece quickly mobilized their armies to form a coalition to resist the invasion of the Persian forces. The frontline was established at Thermopylae in Greece, where King Leonidas of Sparta (played by Gerard Butler) led 300 elite soldiers along with over 4,000 coalition troops. Due to the betrayal of a traitor, the Greek army was outflanked by the Persian forces. To preserve the strength of the coalition, Leonidas ordered the coalition troops to retreat while he and his 300 soldiers held the pass. Hundreds of thousands of the Persian army surged in, and the Spartans, knowing they were doomed, instead rallied their spirits and displayed incredible combat strength in battle. The entire conflict lasted for two days, during which Leonidas and his 300 soldiers were all killed, while the Persian army suffered over 20,000 casualties, including the deaths of two of Xerxes I's brothers.
