Thief Miles (played by Martin Lawrence) collaborates with three associates to steal diamonds, but one of them, Dirk, betrays them. The police are alerted, and Miles, in a desperate situation, hides the diamonds in the ventilation duct of an unfinished building before being captured. Two years later, Miles is released from prison, but everything outside seems to have changed; his girlfriend no longer needs him, and the building where he hid the diamonds has become... a police station! To retrieve the diamonds, Miles steals an ID card and, under a fake identity, disguises himself as a police officer to infiltrate the station. Due to a shortage of personnel, the fake officer Miles quickly gets appointed and partners with rookie agent Carson (played by Luke Wilson). Using his thieving experience, Miles quickly excels in the police department, but the diamonds in the duct have gone missing after being washed, forcing Miles to maintain his disguise. Soon, Dirk reappears in an attempt to get Miles' diamonds again...
