A Southeast Asian government collaborates with multinational corporations to rapidly develop infrastructure in underdeveloped areas. American engineer Jack (played by Owen Wilson) is sent abroad by his company and moves there with his wife and daughter to participate in the project. Jack believes he can start a leisurely new life in Southeast Asia under the shade of coconut trees, but the angry local residents erupt in riots due to the government's corruption disguised as infrastructure development.
