Young Temujin travels with his father, Esugei, the leader of the Kereit tribe, to settle a feud with their enemy, the Merkit. Esugei hopes his son will choose a daughter from the Merkit as his wife, but Temujin instead selects Börte, the daughter of the Onggirat tribe, promising to return in five years to marry her. On the way back, Esugei dies from the poisoned wine of their enemy, the Tatars, and the tribe's cattle and herders are taken captive by traitors. From a young age, Temujin has faced hardships; he wanders with his mother while evading enemy attacks. As an adult, Temujin (played by Tadanobu Asano) still lives in a world of violence; although his life is uncertain, he remembers his promise to Börte (Khulan Chuluun) and finally brings her home, marking a turning point in his life. However, a disaster follows as the Merkit, seeking revenge for past grievances, wound Temujin and abduct Börte. After recovering, Temujin is forced to seek help from his friend Jamukha (Sun Honglei). This film has won 11 awards at international film festivals, including Best Supporting Actor (Sun Honglei) at the 2008 Asian Film Festival and Best Costume Design and Best Sound at the 2007 Russian Golden Eagle Film Festival.
