In 1929, Vietnam was a French colony, and a 15-year-old French girl (played by Jan Mach) was studying at a girls' boarding school in Saigon. Every holiday she would return home, where her mother ran a very small school with little income. After disembarking, they explored Saigon together and had Chinese cuisine at a restaurant, and he drove her back to school.
