This is the Chinese version of 'Ghosts and Lovers'. Zhan Hui is a scholar who roams widely. One night, while staying in a dilapidated temple in Hubei, he encounters a strange wedding procession. Zhan Hui is shocked to see that the bride resembles a celestial being, but she tearfully pleads for help from inside the sedan chair. At that moment, a thunderstorm breaks out, and the King of Ghosts appears to abduct the bride. A heroic figure, Xue San, then engages the King of Ghosts in combat. Zhan Hui finds an ancient sword belonging to Xue San and collects the bones scattered on the ground into a jar before leaving. Upon waking, Zhan Hui doubts whether it was all a strange dream. The next day, he checks into an inn in the city, where the innkeeper's wife persistently bothers him. Suddenly, a woman enters, who turns out to be the bride from the wedding procession, calling herself Xiao Cui. She comes to repay him for saving her life. However, when Zhan Hui gets up in the morning, the beautiful woman has vanished without a trace. While visiting friends in the street, he encounters Xiao Cui and her maid again, but Xiao Cui treats him as a stranger, leaving Zhan Hui puzzled and suspicious. He later learns that this woman is actually Xiao Shu, the youngest daughter of his friend Wei Shu, which feels even more mysterious. That night, Xiao Cui reappears and reveals that Xiao Shu is her sister. She explains that she is already a ghost and that the King of Ghosts covets her beauty and wants to prevent her from attaining rebirth forever. Zhan Hui wishes to help Xiao Cui reincarnate and earnestly asks the Daoist from Wu You Temple to perform a ritual, but the ritual cannot succeed without the help of Xiao Cui's blood relatives.
