However, the following year, John and his publisher were arrested for obscenity, which undoubtedly sparked interest in this obscure novel, leading to rampant piracy with added depictions of same-sex themes. The book reached the United States in the 19th century but continued to face societal bans, circulating only underground. In 1963, a publisher reissued it under the title "John Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure", but it was quickly banned again. This time, the publisher did not comply with the ban; instead, they took the issue to court and ultimately won, allowing the story to finally see the light of day.
