In order to fulfill his father's wish, Viktor (played by Tom Hanks) flies from his homeland to JFK Airport in the United States, but a dramatic event occurs: he is informed that a coup has taken place in his country, rendering his identification and passport invalid, and his visa can no longer be used. In a dilemma, Viktor is forced to stay at the airport, waiting for new documentation. He ends up waiting at the airport for a whole 9 months. During these 9 months, he washes up in the airport restroom and sleeps in the waiting area. He learns to adapt to his surroundings, looking after his own needs at the airport and even finding a job at a construction site. However, his untidy circumstances draw the dissatisfaction of airport manager Frank (played by Stanley Tucci), and what might enrage him even more is that the beautiful flight attendant Amelia (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones) falls in love with Viktor. While enjoying his blissful moments, Viktor also slowly observes the various lives within the airport, finding his own happiness.
