Walter Matthau plays a professional assassin named Trabuco in the film. He receives an assignment to kill a witness, Raddy, when he goes to court to testify. As Trabuco leaves the courthouse and heads back to his hotel, he encounters a distraught Victor Clooney (played by Jack Lemmon), who is heartbroken because his wife Celia (Paula Prentiss) has left him for the head of a strange sexuality clinic in California. Trabuco returns to his hotel room and sets up his rifle. However, the disturbance from Victor next door makes him restless. Victor tries to hang himself in his room. Trabuco breaks the rope Victor is using to hang himself, but Victor manages to climb out the window and prepares to jump to his death. To talk Victor down, Trabuco reluctantly agrees to accompany him to California to find his wife. The two arrive at the clinic, only to discover that Celia has hopelessly fallen in love with the peculiar doctor Jacob Blot and is preparing to file for divorce. Victor decides to return to the hotel to continue his suicide, while Celia and the doctor secretly follow him with plans to inject him with a tranquilizer. However, they mistakenly inject Trabuco instead. Trabuco reveals his assignment to kill Raddy to Victor, who abandons his suicidal thoughts and decides to help him complete the assassination.
