Jon (played by Domhnall Gleeson) is a young man passionate about music who accidentally joins a somewhat neurotic underground band. The band's lead singer and soul is Frank (played by Michael Fassbender) — a talented genius who is also a peculiar man wearing a giant headpiece all the time. Jon follows the band to a remote cabin in Ireland to record an album, where they live in almost complete isolation. Over the past year, Jon has privately been posting videos of their lives on social networks. Finally, the band's unusual experiences catch the attention of a music festival organizer, and Jon convinces the members to travel to the United States to participate in the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in hopes of gaining fame. The film is based on Jon Ronson's memoir. The band leader, Frank, is inspired by Chris Sievey, who was very popular in the 70s and 80s. He was also a humorous actor known for his comedic character 'Frank Sidebottom.' In Frank, one can also see the shadow of unconventional musicians like Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart.
