Richard is a pilot, and after being discharged, he works in a bar where he meets his colleague Barbara (played by Anna Massey) and falls in love with her. After a violent argument with his boss, Richard is fired and, left penniless, seeks refuge with his ex-wife Brenda (played by Barbara Leigh-Hunt). Brenda runs a marriage agency and kindly welcomes Richard, secretly slipping some money into his pocket. Unexpectedly, a few days later, Brenda is attacked and suffocated with a tie by their mutual friend Bob (played by Barry Foster) in the agency. It turns out that Bob is the infamous 'tie strangler' of London. Brenda's death makes Richard the prime suspect. To further frame Richard, Bob seizes the opportunity to kill Barbara, and soon Richard becomes the most wanted man in the city, eventually getting caught. The investigator on the case, Oxford (played by Alec McCowen), finds something suspicious, and with a hint from his wife, he discovers that the real criminal has made a mistake.
