Ah Wah (played by Andy Lau) has always wanted to be a good police officer. Just when he got a good opportunity to show his skills, he is transferred to a team that is extremely demoralized and lacks any motivation to work. Their team is often looked down upon by another outstanding team led by Zhang Yang (played by Cheung Yiu Yeung). Ah Wah is very dissatisfied with Yang's style and clashes with him during an operation. Ah Wah's mother (played by Lam Kin Ming) calls him back home because his girlfriend Alan (played by Maggie Cheung) is being forced by her father (played by Qin Pei) to marry a wealthy man with whom she has no feelings. Alan's father is also Ah Wah's mentor, leaving him torn between love and duty. To make matters worse, Ah Wah discovers that his mother is in a relationship with his colleague Qiu (played by Anthony Wong). After returning to the police station, a group of thugs attempts to break in to rescue their accomplices, but the credit for capturing the thugs is stolen from Ah Wah by Zhang Yang's scheme. Unable to bear it any longer, Ah Wah decides to settle things with Zhang Yang in a taekwondo match.
