Detective Gerry Boyle (played by Brendan Gleeson) from Galway County, Dublin, Ireland, deals with the aftermath of a drug addict's fatal car accident and welcomes the newly assigned officer, Agent McBride. They examine the crime scene and deduce the type of killer based on the evidence, but unfortunately, their thinking is vastly different. Boyle's reasoning is extremely bizarre, leaving McBride completely baffled. They interrogate a suspect together, only to find out that he is just a scapegoat, and the real culprit is still at large. Although Boyle is cynical, he is a devoted son, trying hard to make his mother happy as her time runs short. To crack a drug smuggling case worth $500 million on the black market, American FBI agent Wendell (played by Don Cheadle) starts analyzing the case for the officers, but he is repeatedly interrupted by Boyle. Just as Wendell's superior is about to fire Boyle, he sharply points out the biggest flaw in the report – one of the four suspects is already in the morgue. This makes Wendell take a new look at Boyle, who jokes about racial discrimination. During his duties, McBride unexpectedly gets killed by a philosophical-type criminal. His wife comes looking for him, making Boyle feel a heavy sense of responsibility, and he embarks on a journey with Wendell to hunt down the killer.
