Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) is an extremely rare blue macaw in the world, who was abducted by despicable poachers from the tropical jungles of Rio when he was just a chick. By a twist of fate, he became the pet of a little girl named Linda, and thus they have been together for many years. Now, Blu seems like a pampered homebody, having even forgotten how to fly. One day, a birdwatcher named Tulio (voiced by Rodrigo Santoro) passes by the bookstore owned by Linda (voiced by Leslie Mann). He is amazed by Blu and hopes to take him back to Rio to mate with the last existing female of the species. Though feeling uneasy, Linda decides to take Blu to Rio considering the fate of the blue macaws. There, Blu successfully meets the beautiful macaw Jewel (voiced by Anne Hathaway). Jewel is eager to escape captivity and return to the wild. Meanwhile, a group of criminals has their sights set on these lovely creatures...
