In picturesque Guilin, two families face each other across a river. One family is led by the Wudang clan's Bai Shengfeng (played by Yu Chenghui), who is concerned that if she does not have a son, the Wudang sword techniques may be lost as the Bai family has eight daughters. Bai Shengfeng is perpetually worried and often glares across the river at the Shaolin family. Ten years ago, Shaolin disciples Tianlong (played by Yu Hai) and Erlong rescued eight orphans from the clutches of a gang led by the villain Tu Ying (played by Ji Chunhua). The brothers tirelessly raised the eight godsons while dragging their own romantic matters. They have both been interested in the Bai family's Da Feng and Er Feng (played by Ding Lan) for a long time. However, Bai Shengfeng sees Shaolin as the enemy and sets up harsh conditions, demanding ten cattle in exchange for a marriage. Sanlong (played by Jet Li) and his seven brothers, in an effort to fulfill their godfather and uncle’s wishes, use various clever schemes while developing feelings for Sanfeng (played by Huang Qiuyan) during their prolonged standoff. Meanwhile, the disgruntled Tu Ying sends spies to further disrupt the relationship between the Long and Feng families. Sanlong’s path to propose for love becomes increasingly fraught with obstacles.
