A factory surrounded by skyscrapers houses a group of hourly workers. Liang Dahua (played by Li Qinqun) has a husband who suffered a serious injury due to violating work regulations. Her normally academic son begins secretly working on construction sites to help pay for his father's medical expenses, nearly getting expelled from school. To repay debts, Liang Dahua sells her family's house and tirelessly traverses between the skyscrapers and mansions. In an effort to save the life of wealthy lady Bai Meiyan (played by Zhou Xiaoli), Liang Dahua puts aside past grievances and resigns from her long-time employer to become the caregiver for the paralyzed Bai Meiyan. Hong Yue'e (played by Liu Lili) is determined to support her youngest son, Zhong Sen, at university in Beijing, turning herself and her eldest son, Zhong Lin, into money-making machines. When she learns she has cancer and that her son has hidden his dropout status from her while also becoming a part-time worker, Hong Yue'e receives a devastating blow. Before she dies, she tells her eldest son Zhong Lin that Zhong Sen is not her biological child. The reason she and Zhong Lin worked so hard to support Zhong Sen's education was because of a promise. Meanwhile, the young Zhou Wei endures the pain of her eye disease to care for a French girl, Joana (played by Bei Ailing), who has lost her mother, missing the best treatment window while using her work earnings to pay for Joana's expensive medication.
